“No, you’re not buying our 10 year old son a motorcycle!” a common statement heard in households across the globe. But it’s how you interpret life that decides how exciting it can be. Yannick Read adhered to his wife’s requests and didn’t buy a bike. He locked the shed door and built his own.
Yannick was inspired by a chat with an elderly relative, he recalls “I remember that as a child, my great-grandmother told me she’d caused a minor scandal in London in the 1920s by tearing about on a Rudge!” Hats off to that lady, we can picture it now.
“They are all made from a mix of bicycle frames, scrap and pretty much anything I can lay my hands on. They are all 80cc two-stroke single gear engines running with a dry clutch. The more of them I build the more outlandish they are becoming – the two most recent ones have small glass fuel tanks. They’re so lightweight and narrow that you can hang them on the wall as ‘art’ when they are not being ridden. They are such fun to build, I’m hoping to sell these so I can make more.” Dad of the year award definitely goes to Yannick for inspiring and educating his kids in the all the correct way. And also to Mum, for turning a blind eye to what was going on at the bottom of the garden.
And it’s not just bikes, he’s built a seriously cool Citröen HY van too, in miniature of course. Check here www.yannickread.com
